Raw Edge
Sewing Workshop
Project Info
As a group, we created Raw Edge, a workshop to educating young adults at the University of Florida, its negative impacts, and the methods through which we can reduce the overconsumption of clothing. The concept is centered around a pop-up event featuring a series of workshops teaching sewing techniques needed to upcycle one’s own clothing.
We created a series of zines and some promotional posters for the event, both printed on on a Risograph printer, futhering our goal to create something sustainable–the back of each zine unfolds to show a full-sized poster. Our visual language is informed by the maximalist aesthetics which finds appeal in intentional clutter, akin to the chaotic collage of crafting and altering clothing, shown most evidently in the Raw Edge's logo, a mismatch of several different typefaces. Raw Edge's color palette is a combination of neturals and bright colors, lending to the concept's maximalism. Indie Press is used on the system's title font, resembling printmaking's stamp-like quality. Alkaline Demi is used as the subheader in contrast to Indie Press, a curly script almost resembling thread. DM sans is used for clarity in small body copy. Pieces of hand- photographed and scanned fabric and other sewing tools are used as additional collaged elements.
